On Friday evening; ADO ladies played at home in the Kyocera stadium. This was the most important match in the Dutch half of the BeNe league season. They had to win to have any chance of winning the Dutch league.
A great crowd turned up to watch the ladies earn a point. The game should have finished with ADO grabbing the three points, but glaring misses cost the home side the win.
In the twelfth minute, after some wonderful close interplay amongst the Twente forwards, Maayke Heuver put the ball past the ADO keeper Barbara Lorsheyd, 0-1.
Going a goal down stirred ADO into a bit more action, they began to control the midfield, but failed to take advantage of that dominance until the final few minutes of the half.
In the forty third minute ADO were awarded a free-kick on the right hand side of the penalty box, about 22m from the goal. Paola van der Veen lined up the shot. She did so perfectly as she rocketed a fierce free-kick into the top far corner, leaving Sari van Veenendaal clutching thin air. It was a strike that will be hard to beat this season in any competition around the world, men’s ior women’s football, 1-1.
The second began badly, within a few seconds of the restart Lorsheyd dragged down Heuver inside the box. A clear penalty was awarded. The referee was obviously in a mild mannered mood, as I along with others expected to see the ADO keeper given her marching orders, but to the relief of everybody, he only produced a yellow card. Lorsheyd redeemed herself with a stunning diving save low to her right to palm the ball away and reacting quickly enough to move a second time and gather the ball.
ADO went on the attack and thought they had taken the lead, unfortunately the play was pulled back for an off-side decision.
In the sixty forth minute ADO’s defence went to sleep at a vital time, allowing Ellen Jansen to walk her way through a few challenges, get to the line and get the ball into the back of the ADO net. To say Lorsheyd was not pleased with her defenders would be an understatement, 1-2.
From the restart ADO went forward and instantly had Twente under pressure. A corner was sent over by van der Veen and the head of Sheila van den Bulk sent the ball into the Twente net, 2-2.
After being pulled back on level terms, Twente went for the victory big time. Only some more great keeping by Lorsheyd kept Twente’s forwards at bay. It was a difficult final period for the home team. However ADO missed two late opportunities to grab all three points. The worst being the ball put over the crossbar from only 30 or centimetres out, unbelievable stuff.
The final whistle was greeted well by the crowd, it was an entertaining game. ADO looked the happier of the two teams strange as they really need a win, but the enjoyed celebrating with the crowd. A good night’s entertainment.
Woman of the match: Barbara Lorsheyd
