Saturday afternoon in the Kyocera stadium ADO ladies took on Ajax in the final fixture of their BeNe season. There was a good sized crowd as all the winners of female leagues had been invited to help celebrate the end of the season.
The game was of no significant importance, but was an excellent warm up for next weeks KNVB Beker (Dutch FA cup) final. It would be obvious that scouts from their final opponents FC Twente would be there to watch ADO in action, so anything they would have been working on in training would not be seen during this game.
The game started and it was the visitors who looked the more likely to edge themselves in front, from early on they stretched the ADO defence and had a few opportunities on goal. It took ADO a while to get into the game and when they did the game became very intriguing as both sides were getting chances on goal.
The second saw Ajax straight on the attack and close to breaking the deadlock after three minutes. It was a wake up call to ADO and the two flying winger/forwards Jansen and Beerensteyn began to cause the Ajax defence a lot of problems and the chances began to arrive. Kitty Susan and Sheila van den Bulk went close and it looked as though it was going to be another game where ADO’s chances would not be converted into precious goals.
Just on the hour a great long ball from Bulk in midfield saw Jansen latch onto the well weighted ball and beat the keeper, slotting the ball to the side of the keeper and into the bottom corner of the net, 1-0.
Ajax were an injured animal and immediately went on the offensive. It the Amsterdammers ten minutes to get back on level terms. A cross into the penalty area saw former ADO favourite Tessel Middag smash the ball into the back of the net giving Lorsheyd no chance, 1-1.
Ajax were looking the stronger and were making opportunities, but could not finish them with a goal. As the clock ticked down to the last five minutes ADO captain Lucienne Reichardt played a great ball forward to Jansen. Yet again the ADO forward was one on one with the keeper and the result was the same, this time Jansen calmly slipping the ball into the opposite corner, 2-1.
ADO finished the stronger and Jansen was on the hunt for her hat-trick chasing down everything that was remotely close to her. The final whistle blew and the players and fans celebrated as one, brilliant atmosphere inside the Kyocera.
After the final whistle the end of season awards were handed out. Best new comer was Lineth Beerensteyn. The top scorer was Renate Jansen and the player of the season was the best goalkeeper in the BeNe league, Barbara Lorsheyd. No arguments from me on those awards.
So that is the end of the first cross border BeNe league season: A series of highs and lows for the ADO ladies team, some great victories home and away, plus some terrible defeats. ADO has a young squad and have done themselves really proud this season. The following season will see the younger players benefit greatly from this last season and should make a bigger impact on the league table.
The final competitive game of the football season is when ADO ladies take on FC Twente in the cup final. The game is to be played on Friday 31st May in Katwijk at 19:30. The game being played at the home of Quick Boys, a neutral venue was needed as the famous ADO youth tournament is taking place next Friday at the same time, so no home advantage.
Woman of the match: Renate Jansen: Stretched the Ajax defence time and time again.
