Dutch ladies draw World Cup play-off match

In ADO Den Haag’s Kyocera stadium on Saturday eveing, a record crowd for ladies football in Holland of 13,109 witnessed the ladies teams of Holland and Italy battle it out in the first leg of the World Cup play-off final. The atmosphere was truly amazing as the Dutch got behind their team.

The opening phase of the game was a cagey affair; both teams knew what was at stake and it showed. As the half progressed it was clear the home side were too tense for free flowing football. The Italian side sat back and were happy to build slowly from the defence.

In the eighteenth minute Italy took the lead. There looked to be no danger when the ball reached Melania Gabbiadini. She kept the ball close before firing a shot into the back of the Dutch net, giving the keeper, Loes Geurts no chance, 0-1.

Despite going behind, it took a while for Holland to get to grips with the game. Slowly but surely they began to push the Italians back. The Dutch centre forward, Vivianne Miedema started to use her strength to make things uncomfortable for the Italian backline. There were a few chances, but nothing clear cut. So at half-time the teams went in level.

At the start of the second half the stadium was rocking as a brass band played loudly behind one of the goals. Mexican waves were travelling around the stands as the supporters tried to boost their team. The team talk must have been a good one by head coach Roger Reijners and former ADO ladies coach Sarina Wiegman, as the home side came out and dominated the second forty five minutes.

Eight minutes into a brighter second half Holland got back on level terms. Good play by Lieke Martens and Manon Melis saw the ball come across to Miedema who slid the ball into tyhe back of the net. The stadium almost had its roof lifted off by the explosion of noise, 1-1.

Holland were now moving the ball around nicely, the fifty-fifty challenges were being won by the home side. The intensity was much better. Holland earned corner after corner and free-kick after free-kick. Sad to say, but each strike on goal went either high or wide of the target.

Holland stayed in control of the game. In the closing stages they really pushed hard for the vital winning goal, but the visitors defence was resolute, their players throwing themselves bravely infront of shots to prevent goals.

It had been a great night of entertainment. The Italians leaving the pitch the happier. They must now be favourites to qualify for the finals in Canada next year. Yet if Holland can reproduce their second half display in Italy, who knows what may happen?

The second leg takes place in Verona, Italy on Thursday 27th November, kick-off at 20:30.

ADO ladies hammer SC Telstar

ADO ladies hit four goals in the pouring rain of the Kyocera stadium on Friday night. The home side got off to a flying start. In the second minute Lineth Beerensteyn crossed the ball across the area for Renate Jansen to apply a simple touch to put the ball into the back of the net, 1-0.

Only three minutes later ADO extended their lead. Tula de Wit released Kitty Susan who calmly finished with a nice finish that gave Melissa van der Wiel in the visitors goal no chance, 2-0.

ADO then seemed to relax a bit and allow Telstar more time on the ball, from which they grew in confidence. ADO keeper Jennifer Vreugdenhil having to pull off a fantastic double save to keep Telstar out. That kicked ADO back into life, Beerensteyn, Jansen and Susan all going close. Unfortunately ADO could not keep a clean sheet until half-time. A cross was misjudged by Vreugdenhil which allowed Stefanie van der Gragt to head the ball home in stoppage time, 2-1.

From the start of the second half ADO went for Telstar. Jansen clicked into action, she tore Telstar apart alongside Jansen. Beerensteyn becoming the target for some cynical and brutal tackling, once taking a nasty knock, but she refused to go off and she carried on.

ADO got their third goal in the fifty third minute. A great ball from Jansen found Tessa Oudejans, the ADO players was so relaxed as she neatly lofted the ball high over the keeper into the back of the net, 3-1.

ADO’s fourth and final goal came in the eighty first minute. A mix up in the Telstar area between the keeper and her defenders allowed Jansen to put the ball into Beerensteyn who smashed the ball into the net, 4-1.

This had been quite a simple game for the home side. They are starting to click now as the season progresses. Manager Marcel Valk looked very happy, as was the large crowd.

Attendance: 1,073

ADO player of the Match: Lineth Beerensteyn: Top class performance throughout, Telstar tried to kick her out of the game, but this teenager is one tough lady.
