Floodlight disaster at the ADO stadium

This morning, staff arrived at the Kyocera stadium to discover the floodlight in the corner of the stadium above Vak D had partially collapsed.

Early inspection has discovered that the floodlight light had suffered from serious weather induced metal fatigue. Now the other three floodlights are to be inspected for signs of fatigue. If found to be in danger of collapse, ADO’s final three home games may have to be played in another stadium. The likely venue would be the home of Sparta Rotterdam. We keep our fingers crossed that the one floodlight can be repaired/replaced before the game against FC Utrecht. If the others are not safe, this will not be played in the Kyocera.

ADO attracting the storks

As of today, outside the main stand, in the car park of the Kyocera stadium there has been built a nesting pole for storks.

You can often see these man made bird nests all around the region, the birds do use them, so expect to see a nesting pair there soon. It would be amazing to see the real storks at the stadium to go along side our very own mascot, Storky.

ADO ladies draw with Icelandic champions

This evening ADO ladies played a friendly at home to top Icelandic side UMF Stjarnan, who are the reigning champions of their country. Earlier this week they played at FC Twente, current BeNe league leaders and beat them 0-2, so the challenge was going to be a good one.

With ADO missing some of their stars, notably Lineth Beerensteyn who was on international duty, a few were thinking could be a very difficult game, how wrong they were. Lineth’s deputy was the real star of the game, her name, Maartje Looijen of the ladies youth team. She looks to have a bright future ahead of her at ADO. She was strong, brave, quick and her passing was very good.

ADO took the game to their visitors and the midfield had full control. There were only a few chances early on, but nothing that looked to threaten the goal. Then on the half hour a superb long cross field ball from Looijen was delivered to the forward running Renate Jansen. She collected the ball, easily went around the keeper before putting the ball into an empty net, 1-0.

In the second half both teams made several substitutions. More of the youth team given a chance and they all fitted in well. Long time ADO player Jessie van Leeuwen came on and her strength and ability to defend and hold the ball was good to see again.

ADO were looking completely comfortable up until the final ten minutes. The Icelandic champions then added more tempo to their game, the shots started to go in on goal, thankfully most going wide or over the woodwork. Then in the eighty fifth minute they got the goal they were seeking, Anna Maria Baldursdottir forcing the ball home, 1-1.

At the final whistle it was clear to see ADO were the better team and deserved to record a win over good opposition. After watching many of the younger ladies in action, the future is looking bright for the ADO ladies.

ADO ladies in action on Monday

At 18:00 in the Kyocera tomorrow evening, ADO ladies will host Stjarnan FC of Iceland in a friendly game. This will be a good challenge to the ADO team as Stjarnan are a very stromg side.

The following info comes from Wikipedia, as my Icelandic is not that good to translate from their official website.

The Stjarnan Women play in Iceland’s top division, the women’s Úrvalsdeild. In 2011 the team won the championship two weeks before the end. The team also reached the final of the Icelandic Women’s Cup in 1993 and 2010, losing 1–3 and 0–1 respectively. The team won the cup eventually in 2012 with a 1–0 win over Valur. In 2013 they won their second league title, winning every single game that season thus not dropping a single point.

ADO ladies play tonight

Due to the international football break. ADO Den Haag will not be playing this weekend. However the ADO ladies do play and travel to play away at PSV/FC Eindhoven.
