ADO ladies beat Club Brugge

In the Kyocera stadium on Friday night, ADO ladies took on Belgian side Club Brugge (Bruges) in the BeNe league. ADO and Brugge have a friendship through fans of the mens team so there was a real friendly and lively atmosphere in the stadium.

The game ended in ADO’s first ever win over their Belgian opponents. The first half was an even affair, the second half was all ADO. The first real threat on goal came from Brugge. Kay Cuvelier got the ball after several rebounds and a goal looked certain until Hélène Heemskerk flew into block the goal bound effort brilliantly.

ADO began to push forward more and shots were being had, but nothing to put real fear into the Brugge backline. That was until the twenty fourth minute. Lineth Beerensteyn was released down the right wing, she easily beat her markers and crossed the ball low into the penalty area. The ball came nicely to Franca van de Kuilen who had the easiest of tap ins, 1-0.

There were no more clear sights on goal from either side during the rest of the half. Beerensteyn, Michelle Vrieling were great going forward; and with Marelle Worm closing down everything that came her way, ADO were in full control, but could not extend the lead.

Within two minutes of the restart ADO almost doubled their lead. Beerensteyn hit a rocket of a shot from distance, beating the keeper but not the far post. The rebound came back way to quickly for Worm to adjust herself to knock the ball home and the ball went high over the bar.

Club Brugge were being pinned back far too easily. ADO dominant as Renate Jansen and Tessa Oudejans got more into the game. Then there were two one on one battles of nerve between ADO’s Beerensteyn and Brugge keeper Jana Vanhauwaert. The keeper winning the first, but in the sixty nineth minute the flying winger skipped around Vanhauwaert and stroked the ball into the gaping goal, 2-0.

ADO were running riot, how more goals did not come is still a brain teaser. Shots coming in from Paola van der Veen, Vesna Veltrop, Jansen and Beerensteyn, but by hook or by crook the Belgian defence kept ADO at bay. A good performance from ADO, they were tight, disciplined and worked hard for each other. A good team spirit and ethic is growing. A real solid unit.

ADO player of the Match: Marelle Worm, getting back to full fitness and played with the heart of a lioness.
