On Friday evening ADO ladies returned to BeNe league action after a cup semi-final defeat last weekend to face Belgian side K Lierse SK. It was not the greatest advert for ladies football you will ever see, but a win and three points kept everybody happy.
From the kick-off someone lit the fuse under Lineth Beerensteyn. She looked so up for the fight as after one minute she chased a ball that she had no right to win as she started 20m behind the defender, yet she powered through, won the ball and got a cross in. This was looking good, but sad to say the others didn’t seem to match the enthusiasm of the flying winger.
The following thirty minutes were not great. ADO dominated possession and found it hard to break through a tough tackling Lierse defence. All the shots on goal came from long range, Tessa Oudejans going closest. The home side defence wasn’t troubled at all.
The game sprang to life in the thirty second minute, a cross came in from the right and Beerensteyn’s header hit the post. After that scare Lierse went on tyhe attack, ADO keeper Jennifer Vreugdenhil doing well to stop shots from Niki Decock and Elke Van Gorp within the space of two minutes. The half then fizzled out to its conclusion.
The second half was much better than the first. Renate Jansen got more into the game as ADO really went hard at Lierse down both wings. After fifty five minutes ADO got the breakthrough they their attacking play deserved. ADO were awarded a penalty after a shot was blocked by the arm of a defender. Despite missing her penalty in last weeks shoot out, Jansen took control and easily slotted the ball home passed the keeper Justien Odeurs, 1-0.
In response to going behind, Lierse pushed forward and managed a few attempts on goal, but nothing to threaten the clean sheet. ADO in the final seven minutes really peppered the goal, efforts from Oudejans, Beerensteyn and Michelle Vrieling went either close or were well saved bt the visiting keeper. It could have been a bigger winning margin, but a win is a win and that is all that matters.
