Pia Rijsdijk stunner earns a draw in friendly

On Saturday afternoon, ADO ladies hosted German side Borussia Monchengladbach at the Aftrap, Zuiderpark. ADO’s starting eleven were Dalebout, Ridder, Daal, Delleman, Mesker, Speelman, Dessing, Simonis, van Erk, Koster, Admiraal.

The first half saw ADO mostly on the offensive, Monchengladbach seemed to settle to sit back and defend, when they did have possession, they showed no attacking flair, as they were making short passes across the midfield, rarely pushing forward.

ADO ladies were playing with plenty of aggression, the referee having to talk to some of the players during set pieces. Yet despite the dominance, it was the visitors who came closest to opening the scoring in the thirteenth minute. A shot being hit just wide of the post.

ADO were creating chances, yet the finishing touch was not quite there. This came back to haunt them as in the second minute of first half injury time Gladbach broke down the left. A shot went low into the far bottom corner with the keeper caught out of position, 0-1.

The second half saw a different approach from both sides. It was the Germans who were more in control, playing the long ball trying to catch ADO on the break. ADO ladies were now doing the short passing, but when they played the ball out wide to the left ADO looked really threatening.

The finishing was still poor from ADO, a couple of times, just a solid contact would have got the ball over the line. When ADO leveled in the seventy fifth, it was a goal worth waiting for. Pia Rijsdijk collected the ball twenty two metres from goal, she looked up and curled a stunning shot into the top corner, offering the keeper no chance, 1-1.

In the final phase of the game, both sides had players through one on one with the keepers, yet both shot straight into the keepers arms. The final whistle blew and the draw was the fair result.
