Excelsior 1 v 1 ADO Den Haag
Excelsior of Rotterdam hosted ADO in this early Sunday afternoon kick-off. Neither team were by any means at full strength: ADO having a sick list that is growing longer by the week, so it was interesting to see who would settle first.
The game got off to the worst possible start for the visitors. Within a minute of kick-off some crazy ADO defending by Supusepa and Luksik allowed Leen van Steensal to put the ball into the back of the net, 1-0.
From the bright start to the game, the game then faded into obscurity as the skill factor and effort seemed to drain from both teams. The home support were silent and all you could hear was the chants from the ADO fans in the corner of the ground.
In the thirtieth minute ADO’s injury list gained another casualty. This time John Verhoek was hauled back by Daan Smith, Verhoek tumbled awkwardly to the floor and lay there holding his shoulder. Smith got a yellow card for the clumsy challenge and Verhoek had to be replaced by Mike van Duinen.
The introduction of van Duinen saw the tempo of the ADO team increase and he started to involve, Toornstra, Ammi and Vicento more in the game. Also there was no further action in the first half.
The second half began with another change to the ADO line up; Marc Hocher replacing the ineffectual Luksik. The action was almost identically to the first half. ADO attacked from the whistle and stormed forward towards the Excelsior goal. ADO did get the ball in the back of the net thanks to van Duinen, only for the goal to be ruled out due to Toornstra being in an offside position.
ADO became more dominant as the second half continued. Toornstra was running the show, his vision and speed leaving the midfield of Excelsior clueless as he ran them ragged. Van Duinen and Vicento were working very well together and on the hour got their reward.
A shot from Hocher on the left created havoc in the home teams defence. The ball bobbled around in the packed penalty area and some how Toornstra managed to thread the ball through many legs and into the bottom of the far corner, quality finish, 1-1.
After the goal the game slowed again, not chances were being created by either side, but the tackles were flying in thick and fast and the free-kick total was mounting by the minute.
In the eighty ninth minute; Excelsior almost stole the three points. A free-kick was awarded about 25m from goal. With every ADO player in front of the goal, Roland Alberg went for the direct route to goal. His shot was fierce and crashed off the cross bar and out of play.
At the final whistle both sets of fans were quite subdued. The ADO supporters were the happier as having gained an important point away from home.
ADO man of the match: Jens Toornstra: Really worked his socks off and rounded of his performance with the vital goal.
