Roda JC v ADO

Roda JC 4 v 1 ADO Den Haag

So after two good wins in a row, what would the disruption of an International weekend have on the ADO squad? Would it give them to put a bit more work on their improvements and allow players to recover from minor knocks and be even stronger? Or would it throw what had happened before out of the window?

The long trip to Roda JC of Kerkrade on the German border was a tough challenge, hopefully the memory of their last visit in the play-offs last season would hold them in good stead, or would it be a case of the home side being out for revenge?

Roda kicked and in nine seconds, yes, 9 seconds were a goal down. A sloppy pass was pounced on by the alert John Verhoek, his presence caused the still half asleep Roda backline into a panic, and an attempt of a back pass was made only for Chery to accept the offer before easily beating a very irate Pawel Kieszek in the Roda goal, 0-1. This goal equalled the record of the fastest goal in Eredivisie history.

In the fifteenth minute Roda got back on level terms. Ruud Vormer played a ball into the ADO box to the troublesome Sanharib Malki who despite having three ADO players around him managed to create enough space to fire a shot past Coutinho, 1-1.

In the fortieth minute ADO were given a mountain to climb. A badly misplaced pass by Immers saw Malki gain control and burst forward, the only way to prevent a goal was to get in a firm well timed tackle. Horvath tried but totally misjudged his lunge, sending Malki flying through the air. The referee had no other option than to brandish a red card for foul play preventing a clear goal scoring opportunity.

ADO kicked off the second half and held on to level terms until the sixty third minute. A decisive fast flowing move by Roda ended up with Mitchell Donald getting Roda a well deserved second goal, you could literally see the heads drop of the ADO players, 2-1.

Two more goals followed in the seventy eighth minute and deep into added on time. ADO was tiring and the Roda team could smell a big win. They kept there calm as they eventually put ADO to the sword with a second goal for Malki and their final goal put away with aplomb by Vormer.

At the final whistle the ADO players all looked so dejected and hurt by this defeat. It shows they care! As long as they care they will get it right again very soon. I have never seen the players look so miserable after a defeat. It could have been worse too. Coutinho had a spell in the second half were he held back Roda’s forwards almost single handily.

During the press meetings later, Maurice Steijn admitted he was in two minds on whether to change his tactics after going down to ten men. Looking back he admitted it was his fault. I this case I think he was a bit hard on himself, it was just one of those days when things were going to go wrong no matter what choices he made, every team will have a day or two like this each season, so best just to put it behind them and look forward to next week.

ADO man of the match: Jens Toornstra; his first half performance alone earned him this weeks accolade.

Attendance: 13, 030
