Ijsselmeervogels v ADO

ADO in the KNVB Beker

On Wednesday night ADO Den Haag travelled to the Sportpark de Westmaat home of non-league Ijsselmeervogels of Spakenburg in the second round of the KNVB Beker; the Dutch equivalent of the English FA Cup.

As ADO has being playing well of late a simple passage through to the third round was expected by most in the football community of Holland. As these are games played to a finish with no replays, the possibilities for extra time and penalties always give the underdogs a chance of creating a shock on the night.

The game was played in a stadium where the lighting was terrible, you could hardly see one end of the pitch from the other, surely not right for an important match!

ADO got off to a quick start and was soon in front from a goal by Jens Toornstra in the fifth minute, 0-1.

After that early strike, the flood gates were expected to open and a rush of goals were soon to follow. Ijsselmeervogels did not follow that script. They battled hard and kept the midfield busy and on a few occasions threatened to equalise as ADO’s forwards couldn’t get a second shot on goal.

The second half saw the home side pushing ADO hard. They were giving their supporters a lot to cheer about as they set about their Eredivisie visitors. The nerves were showing as ADO’s play broke down time and time again on the artificial grass.

In the eighty eighth minute ADO sealed the victory thanks to a goal by Charlton Vicento who had come on as a substitute, a relief to all following ADO, 0-2.

At the final whistle the small army of travelling ADO fans gave the team a good send off. The game was to be honest a very dull affair, lacking in passion and highlights. The most important thing is that ADO got through, now to wait for the draw for the next round.

ADO man of the match: Mike van Duinen; pushed himself throughout the game.

  2. Surprised by the team selection, arguably the best eleven available. Would of thought the likes of Vicento, Malone and Elbers would get a full game against Top Klasse opponents.
Good to see ADO taking the cup seriously also a win and a clean sheet :).
