ADO v OFI Kreta

This game was ADO’s final warm up game before the new season begins next Saturday at home to PSV Eindhoven. Manager Maurice Steijn picked a starting lineup which is as close to his first choice as possible. Steijn was not allowed to sit in the dugout as he was banned after being sent off last week for arguing with the referee.

Considering this was supposed to have been a friendly game, the players were throwing themselves into some very heavy challenges. Sad to say, if this had been a league match I think we would have seen the trainers coming on with their magic sponges to treat the players, but this time they shrugged it off and continued, which was good to see. It was by far ADO’s most physically challenging game of the pre-season.

ADO were by far the stronger of the two teams, Gouriye was an inspiration and is fast becoming a favourite with the crowd. Supusepa was working hard and was motivating others around him. There were plenty of chances for ADO, but not one had a clear opening and site of goal.

The weather despite heavy rain earlier was very hot, the referee allowing the teams to take a break for five minutes to take on some water.

The second half was played at a much slower pace. OFI making the rare break forward, once coming close to breaking the stalemate. However, it was in the seventy seventh minute when the decisive goal was scored.

The ball was pinging around the penalty like crazy with shots being blasted goalwards by Ricky van Haaren, two attempts and others, the OFI keeper Losif Daskalakis performed heroics before Mike van Duinen finally knocked the ball into the back of the net. A real crazy goal that was celebrated with laughs and smiles rather than one of joy, 1-0.

The final whistle blew which meant ADO’s pre-season was over. Seven games, four wins, one draw and two defeats; scoring sixteen and conceding five. Not a bad series of games for the club considering the better class of opposition compared to the last few pre-seasons. I think ADO will be happy enough, still things to improve on, but looking strong. Roll on the season.
