ADO v Roda JC

After their first points and victory of the season last weekend at NAC Breda; the ADO players and fans were confident of another three points from this game and how very wrong they were.

The visitors came out with a game plan that made them look as though they were just hoping not to get beat; from the kick-off the time wasting started, this became worse as the game went on, so much so that the keeper was taking thirty seconds to take his goal kicks, this eventually earned Filip Kurto a yellow card.

The referee, Dennis Higler was not helping much with ADO’s approach to the game, making several odd decisions that caused the players to get frustrated and make the fans angry. This eventually lead to a melee in the centre of the pitch after Holla had a little dig at the ankle of Mark-Jan Fledderus. Holla awarded a yellow card as was Anouar Kali  for getting involved too violently.

In the twenty fifth minute another of the referees bizarre decision gave Roda a free-kick on the right after a lawful should to shoulder challenge by Meijers. ADO were not alert and Roda took the kick quickly. A long cross to the far post by former ADO player Marc Hocher found the head of another ADO ex, Kees Luijckx who out jumped a static Beugelsdijk, the ball beating Coutinho inside his near post, 0-1.

A minute later ADO almost got back on level terms. A cross by Malone was met by the head of Holla. He directed his header back across the goal line, just missing the far post.

The game died a death for the following 12 minutes, neither team looked that interested in pressing forward. ADO looked like strangers, they could not string more than three passes together. Cabral and Schet were threats down the wings but nothing was coming from them as a threat to the opposition goal.

Mike van Duinen was trying his hardest to spur his team on, leading by example that unfortunately the others did not follow. In the fortieth minute he chased down Luijckx and turned to attack, his ball was cleverly placed into the danger area, panic was in the Roda defence, yet despite ADO being in and around them in numbers, they kept the goal intact.

In the forty third minute Roda increased their lead. ADO trying to rely on an off-side trap which Roda beat through some tidy, slick passing that allowed the local boy from Scheveningen, Henk Dijkhuizen to slot the ball home with ease, 0-2.

ADO started the second half brightly, being more pressing and direct in their approach to the game. van Duinen almost pulled a goal back, a great cross by Schet to the far post saw was met almost too well by the influential player and the ball went high and wide from close range.

In the fifty third minute Roda got a free-kick wide on the right hand side. The kick taken by Fledderus floats across the box, nobody gets near it and the ball is resting in the back of the net, a very soft goal to concede, 0-3.

ADO were now falling apart, the crowd were on their backs, the home side were not at the game at all. Too many players lost heart which allowed the visitors ample chances to increase their lead, Coutinho making two saves and the referee ruling one goal out for off-side. You could even see white handkerchiefs being waved at the ADO players from fans on the Midden Noord, clearly showing their displeasure.

In the seventy forth minute, one man you can always rely on to show spirit and fight, Tommie Beugelsdijk got involved in an ugly bust up with Luijckx after ADO debutant Gianni Zuiverloon clattered into the Roda keeper, Kurto. A true fight almost broke out but players from both sides separated them.

The boos were ringing around the Kyocera stadium, they almost turned to cheers after Schet went close after a twisting dribble on the left by Cabral. However the boos turned to calls of Shame and disgrace when Roda got their fourth goal.

In the seventy sixth minute Hocher floats a free-kick into the ADO area, the slightest of touches from the head of Mitchell Donald sends the ball out of the reach of a despairing dive by Coutinho into the back of the net, 0-4.

A lot of fans then left their seats for the exits, those who remained chanted the ADO name loud and proud, what real supporters should do, despite what they were witnessing before their eyes.

The result was all ADO deserved sad to say. The Roda players were joyfully dancing in front of their followers as ADO players slowly left the field to applause from those who stayed until the end. Despite having what looks a strong team on paper, there is something missing in the team, they are not clicking together as a unit, this must be sorted soon before they find themselves entrenched at the bottom of the league table.

  1. Thank you Neal, what a bummer. I think your right saying Mike van Duinen was player of the match from the ADO side. That said, I was also quite impressed with Cabral. Sure, he could have done better, but he dares to make the moves and fire a shot on goal. He made some cool technical passings and if he can get his crossings more in line with Mikey, then I am quite hopefully that goals will fall more often – for both of them.
