ADO’s last game of the season was the long trip away to sc Cambuur of Leeuwarden. Yet the fans travelled in number to say farewell for the season. The team was decimated; Gino Coutinho, Roland Alberg and Danny Bakker all out with injuries, Bakker injured in training on Friday, a suspected broken metatarsal; Tommie Beugelsdijk out through suspension.
Considering this was the final game of the season and neither team had anything really to play for, the match was not bad. The home side taking the early initiative, pressing ADO hard. Yet it was ADO who looked the more dangerous, Mathias Gehrt being a thorn in the side of Cambuur. Inside the first fifteen minutes both Michiel Kramer and Gehrt had gone close.
ADO continued to be strong until Cambuur began to attack with more purpose. Until then it was their goal keeper Harm Zeinstra who had been the busiest keeper. In the thirty fourth minute Robert Zwinkels in the ADO goal saved a shot from Bob Schepers, this lead to a corner on the right. The ball came across and Kramer lost his opponent and it was left to former ADO player Ramon Leeuwin to punish the error by putting the ball into the back of the net, 1-0.
In the fortieth minute ADO’s dangerous Dane Gehrt went close, a great ball from Dion Malone releasing the pacy forward who saw it shot tipped over by the Cambuur keeper.
The second half began with Cambuur really trying to end the game early. Zwinkels was called upon to make a great save in the fiftieth minute, tipping the ball over the bar after an effort from Mohamed El Makrini. The ADO keeper was in action a lot in the following period, pulling off several magnificent saves which could have easily seen the home side go in to a three or four goal lead. At this point ADO looked toothless in attack and it looked as though the side would not threaten the hosts goal again.
ADO started to turn things around in the seventy second minute. Malone releasing Gehrt down the right who in turn played the ball across to tyhe on coming Kramer who accepted the chance and placed the ball into the back of the net, 1-1.
Following the goal ADO were put under immense pressure at the back, both Schepers and Paco van Moorsel saw efforts well blocked by the ADO keeper. This spell lasted only five minutes and then ADO were once again in the ascendancy as Malone, Mitchell Schet and Ninos Gouriye all had shots on goal.
In the eighty third minute ADO snatched the three points. Gehrt played the ball out wide to Aaron Meijers, his low cross was pure perfection and gave Kramer the opening to score his and ADO’s second, beautiful in its simplicity, 1-2.
That was it, game over, at the final whistle the ADO players went across to their supporters to thank them. The final twelve games this seaso had seen a dramtic turn around in ADO’s fortunes; from looking certain to be in a bitter relegation fight to now finishing in ninth place. Only one defeat in twelve games was an amazing achievement by all involved, especially to ADO man of the season…Henk Fraser.
So that is it, season over, now to start planning for the 2014/2015 season.
ADO man of the match: Robert Zwinkels, many went for Gehrt, yes he was behind the two goals and was creative, but Zwinkels made four stunning saves that kept ADO in the game at 1-0.
