After last weeks disappointing season opener at home to FC Utrecht, ADO went into this game still full of confidence. The signing of Wilfried Kanon for five years was a great start to the week and he was put straight into the starting eleven. However his return was to turn into a horror show for him.

ADO started the game brilliantly, high tempo and all out attack from all areas. ADO just seem to be missing a natural goal scorer. So many times the ball into the area was just waiting to be hot home. Bjørn Johnsen went close, then it was Melvyn Lorenzen who saw his effort cleared off the line by Ron Vlaar. ADO then couldn’t believe their luck as first  Tom Beugelsdijk and then Johnsen saw opportunities go begging.

AZ occasionally pushed forward and in the eighteenth minute Kanon was awarded a yellow card, which was harsh. That unwarranted card came to haunt him just ten minutes later. The ball was floated into the ADO penalty, Kanon and Vlaar tussled for the ball, both grabbing each other, then to the surprise of everybody, referee Danny Makkelie produced a second yellow for Kanon followed by the red card. Replays showed it was an equal challenge, ADO were incensed and Kanon was distraught and in tears and had to be led away by Lex Immers.

This was not the only punishment for ADO as a penalty has also been given. Wout Weghorst took the spot kick, beating Robert Zwinkels low to his right hand side, 1-0.

ADO held it together for the rest of the half, the ten men battling hard to keep AZ out. Zwinkels was alert and made blocks, as did other defenders who threw their bodies in front of every AZ effort.

The second half was of course difficult for ADO Den Haag. They had to just defend, the captain Aaron Meijers lead by example, he chased after everything as the home side attacked. Tom Beugelsdijk was a rock at the back, making clearances and showing his usual fighting spirit.

AZ finished ADO off with a second goal that came in the seventieth minute. A corner was swung into the near post area, Guus Til rose well and headed the ball across goal into the far corner, leaving Zwinkels stranded, 2-0.

The game finished at 2-0. The fans backed their heroes as they left the pitch feeling unjustly treated by the officials. So After two games ADO still have no points, but it was a strong performance, if it wasn’t for the red card it could have been so much different as ADO did have the upper hand until then.
