After last weekend’s defeat, which flattered Feyenoord, ADO Den Haag were hoping to pick up three valuable points at Heracles Almelo, and the way ADO started the game, it looked like all three points would be returning to the Hague.
ADO who had captain Aaron Meijers missing through suspension, saw Bas Kuipers take his place in defence and Lex Immers taking the captain’s armband. ADO started with high intensity and immediately had Heracles defending. In the third minute, Lex Immers hit the post after a corner by Nasser El Khayati.
A series of chances fell to ADO, all coming from crosses into the box. Elson Hooi and Bjørn Johnsen missing great opportunities to put ADO ahead, but they were literally millimeters away from making the contact that was needed.
In the fourteenth minute ADO were beat through the midfield, a long range effort hit low was dealt with by Robert Zwinkels in the ADO goal. El Khayati then went close again, didn’t look as though ADO would score if they played all night, they were dominating Heracles so much, but a reward for their play soon came.
Twenty one minutes played and a badly hit pass by Heracles, they had two chances to clear the ball, but both defenders got themselves into a mess. Johnsen was lurking and in one movement he turned and smashed the ball into the back of the net off the underside of the crossbar, the keeper, Bram Castro stood no chance, 0-1.
ADO continued to enjoy the possession and created more chance, Johnsen twice and Becker having the goal open to them, but it wasn’t to be. So at half time the Hague were a goal up and looking very much in charge.
The saying “A game of two halves” could not have been more apt in the second half. This time it was ADO continually on the defensive as Heracles at times bullied ADO. It was though two different teams came out for the second forty five minutes.
The home side deservedly got on level terms after fifty four minutes. In and around the penalty box the forwards worked a beautiful quick one touch move before Reuven Niemeijer hammered the ball into the net, 1-1.
ADO looked slow compared to the first half, losing fifty/fifty ball, second in the chases. Then as the game progressed, the ADO goal became under siege. Zwinkels was in absolute top form, producing two world class saves. Vincent Vermeij was causing ADO all kinds of problems and was a real threat.
How ADO managed to stay level was quite amazing. As well as Zwinkel’s heroics, the hosts saw several chances just flash wide of the post or over the bar from bullet headers. When ADO could break, it was long balls up front, but they had no clear cut chances on the Heracles goal.
The game ended 1-1. Can’t believe only two goals. ADO could have been three or four goal in front at half time and Heracles could’ve had four or five goals in the second half. Yet a point away from home is always good, especially against a team that has a great home record this season.
