On Saturday 1st July, the new football season kicked in for real for our local top flight team, ADO Den Haag. The first of their pre-season friendlies was away at LVV Lugdunum, an amateur team based in Leiden.
The first half was completely dominated by ADO and Sheraldo Becker was certainly wound up for this fixture. He was extremely aggressive from the start. Chasing every ball, yelling at his team mates to play better, a good sign of things to come if that kind of attitude spreads amongst the players.
ADO took the lead in the twenty first minute. Ludcinio Marengo, returning back to ADO after a loan spell away, cut inside from the left. His shot was too hot to handle for the keeper, who let it go through his hands, bounce of his chest and into the net, 0-1.
The visitors were totally in control, ADO keeper Robert Zwinkels had absolutely nothing to do, but watch. ADO wasted several chances on goal and could have been four or fives goal up.
There was one explosive moment, Becker raced into the penalty as the Lugdunum keeper came to meet him. The collision was a bad one. After lengthy treatment words were said and both players confronted each other. Other players had to separate them before things got out of hand.
The second half saw a completely new eleven on the pitch for ADO. The big name that attracted the attention was the debut of ADO’s new keeper, Joe van der Sar, son of the former Dutch International keeper Edwin van der Sar. Van der Sar had the same amount of work to as Zwinkels, nothing at all.
The squad players took their opponents apart, scoring three times in the opening nine minute of the half. Another returning player from loan, Dennis van der Heijden scored in the fifty first minute, 0-2. Fifty four minutes in and Melvyn Lorenzen, a player on trial at the club made it 0-3. A minute later it was 0-4 thanks to Delano Ladan.
ADO made it 0-5 in the seventy fourth minute. A quick free-kick was taken and played to Mats van Kins, he looked up and curled a beautiful shot into the net, giving the keeper no chance.
The final goal to make it 0-6 came again from Ladan in the eighty fifth minute. In the final moments of the game ADO were trying to score the perfect goal, intricate passing and interplay was good, but the actual final shot on goal was weak, wide or scuffed.
It was a good day for the fans, a wonderful atmosphere and welcome provided by LVV Lugdunum.
